A secure network overlay for tracking and enforcement of data transaction rules.

Abstract: Digital Data Marketplaces allow to securely share data between competing parties. To maintain data sovereignty in such environments we translate market transactions into audited, secure network connections which enforce policies and track data exchanges.
This challenge spans many layers from legal, where contracts about data sharing are formulated, down to network layers where fine-grained policy enforcement and tracking can take place. In this demo we focus on two aspects of the data market place:
  1. the network and its role in translating market transactions into secure network connections for data transactions, and
  2. the auditing plane that spans multiple domains and maintains an audit trail of the activities of the involved domains to validate the correct execution of the agreed upon transactions.

User Friendly Data Transfers with DTNs.

A worldwide network of DTNs supports users by allowing long distance transfers to be done by specialized systems on optimized paths. Data transfer domains are determined based on geographical region or organization. DNS service records are used to find the appropriate DTN for a recipients domain with support for user specific entries. Between domains the DTNs provide an API that allows for peer DTNs to choose from a selection of protocols designed for high speed data transfers. Within a domain the DTN provides an API that is utilized by user facing data transfer applications such as FileSender. Users continue to use the tools they are familiar with without any need to consider the location of the recipient. Data transfers between domains are performed faster with both the sender and the recipient using their preferred data transfer application. There is no change in how data transfers between users within the same domain are performed. The transfer is carried out in three stages
  • Stage1: User Upload
  • Stage2: Cross Domain Transfer
  • Stage3: User Download
Notifications signal the transition between stages. FileSender need not be run on the same system as the DTN Agent.

2STiC: Security, stability and transparency of inter-network communications.

AMS-IX, NLnet Labs, SIDN Labs, SURFnet, TU Delft, the University of Amsterdam and the University of Twente work together in the joint research programme called 2STiC (pronounced "to-stick"), which is short for Security, Stability and Transparency in inter-network Communication.

2STiC's goal is to develop and evaluate mechanisms for increasing the security, stability and transparency of internet communications, for instance by experimenting with and contributing to emerging internet architectures, such as SCION, RINA, and NDN, as well as the existing (IP-based) Internet. The 2STiC partners envisage that such new types of internet will complement and co-exist with the current Internet, serving specific types of application. Our long-term objective is to establish a centre of expertise in the field of trusted and resilient internets and help put the Dutch (and European) networking communities in a leading position in the field.

We have written a joint blog in which we discuss our project in more detail, for instance in terms of goals, motivation, timeliness and research topics.
